October 2005: Sale of Andrews Island Announced

This exciting announcement was made by Richard Hurlburt, Minister of Natural Resources, at the St. James Anglican Parish Hall in Mahone Bay on Thursday, October 6, 2005 before a group of about 75 MICA members and supporters. Here are links to related news articles.

September 2005: Great News!

We are pleased to announce that the Andrews family, the Nova Scotia Department of Natural Resources and MICA have signed a Purchase and Sale Agreement for Andrews Island.

We anticipate that the Department of Natural Resources' purchase recommendation will be considered by Cabinet in the very near future.

We would like to thank everyone who has donated and pledged to the campaign for the purchase of Andrews Island. The Purchase and Sale Agreement required MICA to contribute a $100,000 refundable deposit by September 16, 2005 and this has been done.

We would like to thank the Honourable Richard Hurlburt, Minister of the Department of Natural Resources and his staff for their hard work toward this partnership purchase of Andrews Island. We look forward to working with his department for future partnership acquisitions.

We would also like to thank the Honourable Michael Baker, Minister of Justice who has met with us numerous times over the past two years and arranged meetings with various department ministers and officials. His work was essential in getting us to this point.

MICA Directors are currently planning an acquisition campaign for Backmans Island that will be announced this fall. We will update MICA membership and the public through this web site, emails and the local press.

We are very excited about the future of MICA. Thanks to you, over 600 people have joined our organization. As MICA evolves, the variety of roles is expanding and we ask you to consider volunteering your talents toward its mission. Please speak to a director if you are interested.

We would like to thank the Andrews family, the Nova Scotia Government and you, our members, for this significant accomplishment.

Sincerely
MAHONE ISLANDS CONSERVATION ASSOCIATION
