Vintage Half-Model
Vintage Half-Model | Possibly a New England Schooner | Provenance unknown
Donated by Charles Maginley who acquired the half-model in 1993, when he was teaching at
the Coast Guard College in Pictou. No-one knew its provenance. It was plain wood, unpainted pine,
when Charles got it, and was held together with wooden pegs. The offsets were in pencil on each layer.
Charles stained the layers light and dark, the better to see the lovely lines.

Informed sources are of differing opinions, but based on their research and knowledge, this half-model
could be a Fredonia (quintessential New England schooner) half-model; or, based on an authoritative
source, The American Fishing Schooners, by Howard Chapelle, it can be seen that the ship Viking of 1898
or 1893 has many characteristics in common with this half-model.

Although it cannot be determined exactly what boat may have been built using this half-model,
nevertheless it is clearly a vintage half-model, and is a fascinating and authentic piece of history.
Value: $800
